VZP, Maxima, Slavia, Uniqa Health Insurance
for EU Citizens in Czech Republic
Different types of health insurance depending on profession
There are differences in health insurance depending on profession, see below table:| minimum required type of insurance | EU-Citizen |
|---|---|
| EU Residence permit | public health insurance, minimum payment 1.080 CZK / month |
| Trade License | public health insurance, minimum payment 1.670 CZK / month |
| Employee | public health insurance, monthly payments by employer and employee |
| Director of sro, unemployed, otherwise not working * | public health insurance, minimum payment 1.080 CZK / month |
| non-working spouse * | public health insurance, minimum payment 1.080 CZK / month |
In all cases the costs of the health insurance depend on the income, except for the last two categories, there health insurance contribution is 1.080 CZK / month (unless income in Czech Republic is generated).
No change in health insurance requirements for EU-Citizens from 1.1.2011
Although for 3rd-Country Nationals the rules have become much more strict from 1.1.2011, for EU citizens nothing has changed concerning health insurance requirements (they were already required to pay 10.000s of CZK per year in public health charges, albeit in monthly parts, not all at once).Health Insurance for EU-Citizens applying for a residence permit
Currently, the foreign police does not specify what kind of health insurance is required when applying for a residence permit, as long as it is from a czech insurance company (it could even be a commercial health insurance actually meant for 3rd-Country Nationals).Health Insurance for EU-Citizens that are trade license owners
EU-Citizens that are trade license owners are required to make monthly contributions to the czech public social- and health system (as in their home country). The height of those charges is dependent on the earned income, but the minimum health charges are 1.670 CZK / month.Alexio provides a trade license registration service, taking care of registrations at the czech tax office, social security and health insurance. For more information about the obligated monthly charges: Trade license.cz
Already having some kind of (commercial) health insurance does not mean that the monthly health contributions do not have to be paid. Commercial insurance and public health insurance contributions are two entirely different things.
Health Insurance for EU-Citizens that are employees
EU-Citizens that are employees will automatically make monthly contributions to the czech public social- and health system (as in their home country). The height of those charges is dependent on the earned income, but the minimum health charges are 1.080 CZK / month. Also the employer pays social- and health charges for the employee. Both employer's and employee's social- and health charges (as well as income tax) are deducted at source, which means that no further charges need to be paid from the net salary that the employee receives on his bank account. When we register you as employee we will also take care of registrations at the czech tax office (important for claiming tax benefits), social- and health insurance.
Already having some kind of (commercial) health insurance does not mean that the monthly health contributions do not have to be paid. Commercial insurance and public health insurance contributions are two entirely different things.
Health Insurance for EU-Citizens that are not (self) employed - for example directors
In case an EU-Citizen is not working (unemployed, only taking out dividends as director or otherwise not employed) the situation is not so clear at all, because although also people in this group are required to make monthly contributions to the social- and health system, they are not automatically in the czech system (or even worse, remain obligated to contribute to the system back home). For this category, any health insurance will provide access to czech medical care, but if it is a commercial insurance (such as the emergency- and 'complex' care insurance for 3rd-Country Nationals) it does not comply to the requirements for contributions into the public health system, so this will form a problem at some point (and you will be required to pay years backwards).
We recommend taking the VZP public health insurance, because it is the only insurance directly connected to the EU public health system. VZP will be accepted as valid insurance in all EU countries and gives you access to all public health facilities in Czech Republic and Schengen without problem.
(Free) insurance for children and spouse of working EU-Citizen
In certain cases it is possible to insure children and spouse on the public health insurance of the working spouse. There are however a number of conditions:- the working spouse is an EU-Citizen,
- has a job as employee or has a trade license,
- children do not go longer than 4 hours per day to kindergarden,
- children do not go to after-school daycare.
Should the above not apply, then it is possible to take a separate health insurance for children.
In case the second spouse is unemployed, then she / he can also receive insurance like the children. Are the above conditions not met, then the second spouse is obligated to make monthly health contributions, unless she / he is a 3rd-Country National (and does not have permanent residence). In that case the 'complex' health insurance is required.
Obligation to de-register from the health insurance and social system in the country of origin
It is important to inform the authorities back home that the person is paying social- and health contributions in another EU-Country (Czech Republic), to prevent that on return to the home country after a couple of years the authorities will demand years of social- and health contributions, or, even worse, still expect monthly social- and health contributions although you have left the country.Even better, before leaving the home country, explicitly end the social- and health contributions and get the proof of it (it is the so-called E101 form). This will save you a lot of trouble later on.
Also, we recommend to get the czech residence permit as soon as possible, because it is an offcial proof when the person entered the country to avoid discussion about social- / health charges and tax-residency.

Alexio offer of health insurance by VZP, Maxima, Uniqa and Slavia for EU-Citizens
